The People

Southport Aerospace Centre Inc. (SACI) is a non-profit organization shaped by its aviation legacy and the people who operate and sustain its campus. f-BLOK collaborated with SACI through feasibility studies and visioning workshops to understand their operational needs, growth plans, and the values they wanted the new administrative building to embody. This process informed a design focused on supporting staff, emphasizing accessibility, wellbeing, and connection.

Led by f-BLOK as prime consultant, the project team guided the visioning, programming, design, and permitting processes, overseeing the project from concept through construction. This collaborative effort brought together experts in:

  • Architecture and Interiors (f-BLOK)
  • Structural Engineering and Sustainability (Crosier Kilgour)
  • Mass Timber (Western Archrib)
  • Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (KGS Group)
  • Landscape Architecture (Scatliff Miller Murray)
  • Construction Management (Parkwest Projects)

Working closely with SACI, the project team created a building that supports the people who work there and the operations they carry out every day.

The Process

The Product

Designed to consolidate Southport Aerospace Centre Inc.’s administrative, operational, and public-facing functions into a single hub, the new Peggy May Legacy Centre anchors the campus and celebrates its aviation heritage. Located at the heart of the site and connected to adjacent cultural and interpretive parks, the building supports staff and visitors, while reflecting the organization’s values and forward-looking vision.

To achieve these objectives, the project emphasized operational efficiency, accessibility, and long-term sustainability. The design responds directly to the needs of a growing workforce, the requirements of campus operations, and the experience SACI sought to create for all who visit.

Key features and program elements include:

  • A prominent atrium lobby that celebrates Southport’s aviation legacy and creates an inspiring arrival experience
  • Flexible gathering and event spaces on the main floor, supporting meetings, community events, and operational activities
  • Upper-level staff spaces designed for collaboration, efficiency, and comfort, with a range of work and meeting areas
  • Direct connection to cultural and interpretive parks, reinforcing the building as a central hub for campus life
  • High-performance, environmentally responsible systems targeting LEED Silver and Zero Carbon Building Design Standard Accessibility Certification
  • Integration of renewable energy systems to reduce operational costs and environmental impact
  • Durable, long-lasting materials and strategies that provide natural light, outdoor views, and green site space
  • Inclusive and accessible facilities compliant with CSA B651:23 accessibility standards, including gender-inclusive amenities
  • Thoughtfully planned adjacencies and adaptable spaces that support diverse workflows, communication, and engagement

The result is a distinctive, future-ready facility that strengthens Southport’s daily operations and fosters meaningful experiences for staff, visitors, and the community. As a gateway to the campus, the building rises from and nestles into the prairie landscape, with its signature swooping kinetic facade animating in the wind and sunlight. By uniting administrative and public-facing functions, the Peggy May Legacy Centre enhances workflow, supports collaboration, and creates spaces that connect people, place, and purpose across the Southport campus.
